Unbranding 101

Burger King Studio: Wicker Park, Chicago

Quarter Pounder: Shibuya, Tokyo

On oct. 12 BK Studio opened in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood at 1904 W. North Ave. A kind of artist's loft/think tank/art space blah blah etc. packed with things the kids are supposed to be into these days like DJ's, silk screen T-shirts, and sneakers. Noticeably absent, were actual Burger King burgers. Now comes word that McDonald's, not to be outdone, has opened "Quarter Pounder," in Tokyo's Shibuya neighborhood. The ultra modern eatery is almost entirely devoid of McDonald's branding even going as far as serving traditional McMeals in unbranded packages. The whole thing smacks of a "Denny's All Nighter" debacle. More information on Mcdonald's Quarter Pounder can be found courtesy of Neil Duckett in Tokyo.

NOTCOT: Esquire's 75th Anniversary E-Ink Cover from Jean Aw on Vimeo.

For the magazine's 75th Anniversary, Esquire took their limited addition covers to another level. Some of the Magazine's advertisers were more than happy to join in and experiment with the endless possibilities of the new technology.

Nose Candy

In a misguided attempt at turning breath mints into a hip night-out accessory, Hershey has released the new Ice Breakers PACS. The granular mint which is actually just mint flavored sweetener is housed in individual dissolvable blue baggies. Needles to say, Someone probably tried to get stoned on breath mints last night, someone will be getting shot today for selling bogus drugs and someone at Hershey will be getting fired come Monday.

Creative Coffee

Simple ideas are sometimes the most brilliant. The MyCuppa Tea and Coffee mugs from SuckUK use pantone like swatches to help blend the perfect cup every time. Cream and sugar or 19-0912 TC?

Happiness in a Can

McCann Worldgroup wants coke to conquer China. How do they do it? A fully integrated campaign aptly titled 365 days of Happiness. This 7 minute video shows how a concept, even something as ambiguous as "happiness" can encompass just about every media known to man and some previously undiscovered media like magnetic LED lights.

Yahtzee Reviews Orange Box

For weeks now I've been watching this commercial for the Orange Box. I'm not a gamer. I'm not even very good at using chop sticks but I'm also not oblivious to the fact that millions of 12-30 year-old's out there are the equivalent to Mr. Miyagi catching flies when it comes to video games. So I thought it was an interesting promotion. 5 games. 1 box. Hell of a deal. But that's not all, Steam,a subsiterary of Valve, the distribution company behind the Orange Box, offers users who previously purchased Half-Life 2 or Half-Life 2: Episode One and then purchased The Orange Box to receive gift subscriptions for their duplicate titles that they may give to another person added on a Steam Friends list. Brilliant! Essentially what they've done is forgone short term profits in an effort to build a consumer community.
However, the gaming community is a fickle one, where the reviews of the community far outweigh any teaser ad. This one comes from Yahtzee, a British-born, currently Australian-based writer and gamer who takes a stab at the Orange Box only to find the contents a little unsatisfying. Full review below...

Can You Hear Me Now?

The creative opportunities afforded by packaging design never cease to amaze. Recently, Goodmorning Technology unveiled a new box design for Widex hearing aids. The packaging features a sound wave pattern displayed on a two layer plastic sleeve. When the box is pulled from the sleeve, the sound waves appear to move. Those fluent in sound wave or with enough time on their hands to enter the pattern into one of a million studio programs will hear the brand message loud and clear, “High definition hearing”.
